NavIC - An Indian GPS, Every Indian Should Know
What is NavIC?
NavIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation.NavIC is India's own Navigation System, its service is similar to United States (US) Global Positioning System (GPS). At the moment NavIC consists of seven satellites. NavIC is designed for better position accuracy better than 20 metres in India. NavIC covers an area of 1500 km from the Indian boundary. Its main beneficiaries will be Indian Mariners, fishermen, armed forces.
Why NavIC? Kargil war
NavIC is better than GPS because it is supposed to be more accurate up to 5 metres than GPS accuracy. India had felt earlier for a separate satellite navigation system, but what makes the nation realise it's much important? "Kargil war".
What we will do, when we most need a global power, and it's refused. Yes, that happened during the Kargil war. In 1999, India asked GPS data from the United States (US) to track the Pakistani troops in Kargil. The US denied the request from India, at that point of time, the nation realises the separate navigation system for location services.
Country Status
NavIC makes India enter into an elite club of countries, that have their own satellite-based location services for their nations, like the United States (US) GPS, Russian Glonass, China BeiDuo, Europe Galileo.
How NavIC Useful?
NavIC covers India and its surroundings with the help of seven satellites.NavIC provides two types of services namely Standard Position Service (SPS) and Restricted Services.
Standard Position Service (SPS) will be available to each resident of India. The main Beneficiaries are fishermen, it prevents them from crossing the nation's border. The service can be utilized by the drivers, residents for moving from one place to another.
Restricted Service will be available to authorised users including defence, intelligence agencies, and armed forces to aim a better focus on target during the war.
When will be available to us?
After ISRO announced about NavIC, smartphones companies like Xiaomi, Realme announced they will bring NavIC in their future smartphones for location-based services, this might replace GPS with NavIC.
ISRO has partnered with Qualcomm to merge NavIC in its new processors. So that the smartphones companies bring phones with NavIC support. Soon we will get Smartphones with our nation satellite-based location service NavIC.
Some of the Processors that have NavIC support are Snapdragon 765, Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 460, Snapdragon 662.
